Description
The Hopton War Memorial is a structure erected in 1919 located in the churchyard of All Saints Church in Hopton, Suffolk.
Made of ashlar limestone, the memorial features carved decorations and inscriptions. It stands 2.5 meters high and consists of a square stone obelisk topped with a pyramidal point. Each side of the obelisk has an apex adorned with foliate decoration, and a horizontal band of relief-carved circles is positioned between the apexes and the top. The memorial is placed on a three-tiered plinth and rests on a square base.
The main inscription is incised on the west face of the obelisk, stating: "IN LOVING MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO LAID/ DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/ (NAMES)/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT/ A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." Below this, on the upper step of the plinth, is an additional inscription: "1939 – 1945/ (NAMES)."
The names of the fallen are organized by regiment, with details including service number, rank, surname, initials, and unit.
