Description
The Railway Viaduct over the River Ceiriog is a Grade II* listed structure built of coursed squared rock-faced stone, with the upper arch stage made of brick faced with stone. It is approximately 260 meters (849 feet) long and features 16 arches, with ten forming the major span that rises 30 meters (100 feet) above the river. At each end, there are three arches that were originally constructed in wood and replaced with stone in 1858. The main piers of the viaduct taper upwards to an ashlar fascia and torus moulding at the springing line. Above this, there are decorative arched niches that include architraves, keystones, and pediments. The arches between the piers are made with ashlar voussoirs backed to course, featuring a dropped keystone. A modillion cornice is located below the ashlar parapet.
