Description
Chirk Mill is a large three-storey building with an attic, oriented north-south. It is constructed of brick and painted, topped with a slate roof that features coped gables. The mill is four bays wide and has been extended to the south by an additional bay. A cantilevered hoist bay, which is bracketed and extends west from the roof, is now painted with black framing. The windows are timber casement style, with cross windows on the gable ends, and the top-floor windows are shorter. The entrance is located at the center of the west side. At the north end, there is a lean-to structure and a circular window in the top gable.
Inside, the mill has heavy floors supported by softwood cross beams, with some cast-iron columns at ground floor level. The roof features a tie beam and double collar construction, with the king post dovetailed into the apex and queen struts. There are two tiers of purlins, and the tie beams, which are 40 centimeters deep, are strapped to the queen posts. Some window sills are made of large fireclay bricks measuring 22 by 45 centimeters.
