Description
The cow-house at Branas Uchaf is a long single-storey building constructed from random stone, featuring a slate roof on the northern pitch and corrugated iron sheeting on the southern pitch. The front of the building has a single boarded door located to the right of the center, which rises to the eaves and is flanked by ventilation slits. The northeast corner of the structure appears to have been rebuilt. The eastern gable end includes a window with timber slats beneath a segmental brick head on the left side. To the left of this, there is a short rear wall from a single-pitched addition. The western gable end has a loft hatch. At the rear, there are three doorways, with the far left doorway featuring steel shutters and a window opening situated between the central and right-hand doorways. At right angles to the right end of the building is a single-pitched range that has a central boarded door. These structures enclose a small rear yard.
Inside, the cow-house has a five-bay layout supported by tie-beam trusses with struts. A massive shallow-arched tie-beam on the western side appears to have been reused, possibly originally part of a cruck-truss. This tie-beam bears an engraved date of either 1607 or 1667, likely dating from the time the building was constructed. The cow-house is currently used as a timber store.
