Description
The Barn Range at Plas-yr-esgob is an L-shaped collection of three barns situated at the side of the farmyard, positioned at the top of a steep slope to the west. The eastern front of the northernmost barn features partial timber framing, while the central barn is constructed from stone. The southern barn is oriented at right angles and extends down the slope, resulting in a rear bay of significant height; it is also built of stone. The masonry throughout is primarily local slatey rubble, except for the north side gable wall, which combines this material with local limestone. A limestone plinth supports the timber framing of the northernmost barn. The later cowsheds at the rear are made of local slatey rubble with some modern brickwork, and all barns have asbestos roofing.
The northernmost barn showcases square timber framing, two panels high, with infill made of laths and some boarded sections. It has two boarded loft doors on the left and vent slits below the timber framing. The return gable elevation on the right features additional ventilation slits and a small loft door.
The middle barn includes a door, a high-level loft opening, and ventilation slits.
The southernmost barn has a door and several ventilation slits on its yard-front elevation, along with numerous ventilation slits on the left return elevation to the south. Additionally, there is a high-level pulley wheel on the south elevation, likely associated with the operation of a threshing engine.
