Description
The L-plan barn ranges at Maesllech consist of two barns forming an L-shaped layout. The earlier lower barn is situated on a sloping site, while the later barn is built at right angles to it across the slope. The lower barn features a high rubble-stone sill and has walls made of simple box-framing, which are now covered by weatherboarding and corrugated iron sheets. Its steeply-pitched roof has a half-hipped lower end and is also covered with corrugated iron. The threshing bay on the east side has full-height boarded doors, while the west side facing the yard is infilled with a low blockwork wall topped by corrugated sheets.
The upper barn is constructed of rubble stone and has a corrugated iron roof. On its south side, facing the yard, there is a full-height doorway at the angle with the lower barn, which has replaced boarded and corrugated iron doors. To the left of this doorway are two ventilation strips. A lower cart shed, added in the late 19th century, is attached to the left gable end, obscuring some stepped ventilation strips. This cart shed consists of two units, is open-fronted to the yard, and has a slate roof on the right side and a corrugated iron roof on the left side. A lean-to is built against its gable end, featuring a boarded door under a wooden lintel.
The right gable end of the upper barn projects slightly in front of the lower barn. It has two ventilation strips and a loft doorway in the corrugated iron gable. The north side wall contains a full-height doorway with double corrugated iron doors, offset to the right, and is flanked by pairs of ventilation strips on both sides. The cart shed has a rubble stone rear wall.
The lower barn contains three central bays with narrower outer bays and retains four cruck trusses with lapped tie beams and collar beams.
