Description

The barn at Penhein is a very large structure built from local roughly coursed limestone rubble, featuring dressed quoins and brick heads above the openings. It has a steeply pitched roof covered in corrugated sheeting. The main entrance is on the north side, where a large projecting midstrey leads to the threshing floor. This area has tall cart doors made of diagonal boarding beneath a segmental brick head. Above the cart doors, there is a smaller opening for the hayloft and a circular opening in the gable above that.

On either side of the main barn, there are wings that include two tiers of strip vents and a tall roof that is hipped at both ends. The west angle of the barn is occupied by a single-storey lean-to shed made of corrugated metal. The ends of the wings also feature two tiers of slits, with a door inserted on the first floor at the west end. The base of the walls is battered, with an additional thickness of stone to support the barn's unusual mass and height. The south wall, which faces the foldyard, has additional doors and slits.

Since 1978, large silos have been integrated into the barn, making it difficult to fully view the interior. The first floor remains intact within the porch, supported by massive beams. The barn has a nine-bay roof with eight large queen strut trusses featuring collars, along with three tiers of purlins and rafters, most of which are original.
