Description
Dolygaer is a 2-storey, 3-bay house built in the Queen Anne style, featuring rendered walls painted cream and a hipped slate roof with swept projecting eaves. On the left side, there is an original tall rendered chimney stack, while the right side has a late 19th-century blue-brick stack that has replaced the original. Inside, there is a central added open porch leading to a 6-panel front door. The windows are 12-pane horned sashes, with narrow casements located at the upper right and left of the right side wall.
The lower rear kitchen wing is offset to the right and connects to the main house's side wall. It includes a boarded door on the left side, a central 16-pane hornless sash window, and two 2-light upper-storey casements with segmental heads. A battered buttress is located at the right end, beyond which there is a lower one-storey and attic projection. This section features an inserted 2-light casement and a half-lit door on the right side.
At the rear, the house has casement windows in the right-hand bay. The central projecting stair turret includes a fixed metal-paned window at landing level above an outshut that has been added to the rear wing, which has a hipped roof. Above the outshut, the rear wing displays a 19th-century slate-hung wall with a 2-light casement on the right. The lower projection of the rear wing has a boarded door flanked by small casements.
Inside, the central entrance hall features a flagstone floor. The full-height dog-leg staircase has plain square balusters and newels, although the upper flight leading to a former attic storey is now sealed off. The room to the right of the entrance hall contains a large fireplace with a timber lintel and a bread oven. The rear wing, which originally served as the kitchen, has two back-to-back fireplaces, both with timber lintels. The fireplace in the later rear projection also includes a domed bread oven and has 19th-century stairs leading to a former sleeping room for servants.
