Description

The Barn at The Great House is a large 18th-century corn barn. The south gable is constructed of rubble stone, while the north gable wall and both long walls are made of rubble stone up to about 2 meters high, with timber framing above that is covered in external weatherboarding. The roof is made of corrugated metal.

The east front faces the farmyard and features off-centre doorways leading to the threshing floor, which have 20th-century plywood doors. On either side of the doors, the stone base walls have two vent slits. The upper wall to the right is weatherboarded, while the left side is covered with corrugated metal sheeting. There is a large metal sliding door on the far left.

The west elevation faces the road; the wall on the left has a stone base with corrugated sheeting above and 20th-century plywood barn doors. The wall on the right is entirely stone and includes, from left to right, a metal door, a reused 3+3 pane casement window, and a 2-pane window. The south gable features a square barred opening to the upper loft and a flat-headed doorway on the ground floor. The north gable has an attached lean-to cowshed.

The barn has seven bays and box-framed walls in two tiers. It contains six collar and tie beam trusses with queen posts and two tiers of purlins. The south end is lofted and has a transverse 20th-century blockwork partition leading to a milking parlour.
