Description
Kingsfield Farmhouse is an early 17th-century farmhouse with a two-storey main block and attic, accompanied by a projecting stair wing to the rear and a single-storey addition to the north. The farmhouse is constructed of painted rubble stone with a slate roof. The lateral stacks flanking the rear stair wing are noteworthy, featuring broad, projecting stone bases and tall brick flues.
The east front has two gabled dormers, with blocked window openings. The first floor features a 20th-century three-light transom window with a timber lintel, a three-pane casement, a similar three-light transom with a skewback lintel and keystone, and a further 3+3 pane casement. The ground floor includes a 20th-century porch with a hipped slate roof, and a fine 17th-century inner entrance doorway with an ornate shaped door-head and a plank and batten door with strap hinges. To the left of the porch is a 17th-century three-light transom window with a segmental arched head, stone voussoirs, a keystone, and a stone sill. To the right is a similar transom and a 3+3 pane casement, followed by a single-storey addition with a boarded door and a 3+3 pane casement. The rear elevation showcases an off-centre projecting stair wing, flanked by projecting lateral chimneystacks. A two-light mullion window is positioned on the first floor to the right of the stair wing. The ground floor on the left features a three-light sunk chamfer mullion with an angled dripstone, and a similar two-light window on the ground floor of the stair wing. The north gable has a 17th-century three-light window to the upper part, a 17th-century four-light mullion window with 2+2+2+2 panes casements below, and a 20th-century 3+3 pane casement on the ground floor, all with angled dripstones.
The internal layout consists of three units: a central hall, a parlour to the left, and service rooms to the right. The ground floor features ovolo moulded ceiling beams. A fine post and panel partition with reed moulded posts separates the hall and parlour. The parlour includes an ovolo moulded wooden fireplace lintel with a small pointed arched recess cut into its face, and a spice cupboard to the left. A 20th-century fireplace lintel is found in the hall. Ovolo moulded doorways, with matching shaped ornate door-heads, lead from both parlour and hall to the back stair. The partitions at the service end have been removed. First floor rooms feature chamfered ceiling beams with hollow and fillet (Wern-hir) stops, and a transverse post and panel partition corresponding to the ground floor layout. The oak baulk stairs ascend in quarter turns, with landings around a central square boarded pillar. A blocked three-light diamond mullion with wooden stanchions is located on the top landing, with a two-light mullion on the landing below. The spacious attic comprises five bays, with collar trusses and three tiers of purlins. An attic doorway has a 17th-century plank and batten door with a wooden latch.
