Description
The Threshing Barn at Bryngwylan is a gabled vernacular structure dating from before the 18th century. It is built from local random stone rubble, featuring a massive boulder stone plinth and quoins that are characteristic of traditional stone buildings in this area. The barn has a hand-riven slate roof with low gable parapets.
On the downhill gable end facing west, there are two tiers of two ventilation slits, along with an additional slit at the apex. The north and south elevations each have opposing doors; the south doorway is accessed by a short flight of stone steps and features a split boarded door with iron strap hinges and a stone lintel above. The north door has a replacement concrete lintel. To the left of the south door, there is a single window with a stone lintel and sill.
Inside, the barn has a four-bay open rafter hardwood roof supported by through purlins on trusses, which include chamfered tie beams and collars. The principal rafters are connected at the apex and feet with pegged mortice and tenon joints. The floor steps down approximately 0.75 meters to the west of the threshing floor, and there are remains of line shafting machinery at the eastern end.
