Description

The Pigs Sties, Shelter Shed, Hay Loft, Shed, and Stockyard Walls at Glan yr Afon are a range of vernacular farm buildings dating from the 19th century, aligned roughly east to west. They are primarily constructed of local stone rubble, with some brick, and are situated on a site that slopes down towards the river. The roofs are gabled and made of Welsh slate, featuring clayware ridges.

At the western end, there are pig sties with a brick gable wall facing the river. The yard is enclosed by a low brick wall to the south, which is retained by a curving rubble wall on the western side. The L-shaped cow-housing includes a four-bay open-fronted shelter-shed, or hammel range, characterized by squat semi-elliptical arches over the openings in the southern elevation. There is a wing at right angles at the eastern end that contains a hayloft, accessible via stone stairs leading to a boarded doorway in the southern gable wall. The stockyard is enclosed by the eastern wing and low curving stone rubble walls to the south and east, as well as an eaves height wall to the west.

Attached to the eastern end of the byre is a gabled shed with a boarded doorway in the southern elevation. The byre features an open rafter roof supported by king post trusses. Other buildings were not accessible for inspection at the time of the resurvey.
