Description
Capel Cefn Coch is a simple domestic-scale vernacular chapel built in the 19th century, featuring a rectangular plan and an adjacent two-storey chapel house to the east, connected by a linking block to the north. The structure is constructed of local stone rubble with slobbered mortar, while the south and west elevations of both the chapel and house are hung with Welsh slates. The roofs are gabled and covered with Welsh slates, featuring plain chamfered timber barge boards. The house has brick chimney stacks above its gables, and the linking block has a corrugated steel roof.
The chapel has a symmetrical south gable end facing the road, which includes a central pair of 12/12 hornless sash windows. The west elevation also features a similar window in the center, while the north gable end has a single central 15/15 sash window. All windows have hornless sashes with narrow glazing bars and retain much of the original handmade glass. The east elevation, facing the back of the house, includes a gabled entrance porch made of squared stone rubble, topped with a slate roof that has moulded and scalloped bargeboards and a decorated apex finial. The entrance features double 4-panel doors and a fanlight set within a two-centred pointed arch.
The front elevation of the house, facing east, is symmetrical and has three bays of windows along with a central side entry porch. At the roadside, cast iron railings set into a stone plinth boast elaborate spearhead finials, complemented by matching double gates and cast iron gateposts.
Inside, the chapel has a plain plastered interior with a circular ventilator at the center of the ceiling. The furnishings are polished or varnished pine, and the boarded floor gently slopes down from the north to a simply carved pulpit. The chapel also features gated pews with panelled backs.
