Description

The farm building on the west side of the farmyard at Fron Newydd is a Grade II listed structure built of local stone rubble with slate roofs. One section has been replaced with corrugated sheeting, and the lean-to cow-shed at the lower end features corrugated asbestos. The building consists of three parts, with the upper gable end set at right angles to the raised terrace where the house stands.

The upper section serves as a cow-shed, featuring a boarded door in the center of the yard-facing elevation, a vent to the left, and a small-paned window to the right. There is another door towards the lower gable in the rear wall, along with an additional small window. A small pitching door is located in the upper gable, accessible from the raised terrace. The second section, originally a carthouse and now a cow-shed, has a granary above it. The wide carthouse door has been reduced to a boarded door under a large stone lintel, with stone steps leading up to a renewed door into the granary. The third section, at the southern end of the range, is a lean-to cow-shed with a boarded door and a small window.

The original cow-shed features two rough trusses of 18th-century type, with raking braces to the collar, two purlins, and flat rafters. The traditional stall layout has been retained, with feeding passages against each gable end. The former cartshed has also been adapted as a cow-shed, complete with wooden stall divisions and a feeding passage against the rear wall. The granary above still contains wooden grain bins that are slate-lined against the stone walls of the building. The lower cow-shed has concrete stalls, which reconstruct an earlier arrangement from around 1947-1948.
