Description
Hendre Cottages is a symmetrical terrace of six two-storey cottages built in red brick, featuring slate-roofed porches, slate roofs, and red tile ridges. The terrace is highlighted by four large yellow-brick chimney stacks that are fluted to resemble grouped stacks and have prominent corbelling at the top.
The two central cottages are slightly set forward and boast large paired gables at the front, with paired doors located beneath a single bracketed porch roof. Each gable has two-light windows positioned centrally beneath it, and decorative brickwork adorns the heads of the gables. The other four cottages are arranged as quasi-symmetrical pairs, each with paired dormers, two-light windows beneath the dormers, and single-light windows on the outer sides. One cottage features a door and porch in the angle next to the advancing central cottages, while the other has its entrance in the end elevation. The entire terrace is accented by a mid-height string course made of brick. The cottages have timber casement windows, varying from one to two lights in width, with smaller fixed lights above transoms for all but those against the eaves.
Each cottage in the group has a recent two-storey rear extension for kitchens and bathrooms, which has a flat roof and is constructed in a red brick that does not quite match the original. Above the joined porches at the center of the terrace, there is a small carved monogram for Tom Naylor-Leyland, dated 1877.
