Description

This former primary school is a one-and-a-half-storey building constructed in the early Victorian period, specifically in 1846, and designed in the Neo Jacobean style. It is built from snecked limestone blocks with ashlar dressings, primarily made of yellow sandstone. The steeply-pitched slate roof has been renewed and features four large skylights on the front pitch.

The building has fine shaped gables at each single-bay end, adorned with ball and obelisk finials on square kneeler blocks that have heavily-moulded and bracketed bases. The right gable has been slightly reduced in size. The symmetrical facade consists of seven bays, with the central entrance bay being advanced and gabled, topped with a geometric apex finial.

There are steps leading up to the chamfered entrance, which features a recessed four-panel door, with the upper two panels being glazed. Above the door is a moulded cornice with strapwork overthrow. A two-light mullioned window with a moulded cornice and plain modern glazing is situated above the entrance. Above this window, there is a stone-carved scroll displaying the date in raised Roman letters.

On either side of the entrance bay, there are three two-light mullioned windows, along with additional windows on the ground and first floor of the gable ends. Each bay on the facade has a tall gabled dormer with slab copings and crocketed kneelers, featuring arched windows with moulded jambs and plain modern glazing. A squat staged chimney is located on the right side, complete with a moulded cornice and capping.

The interior was not inspected during the survey.
