Description

The Palladium, which includes shops facing Market Street, is a former theatre built in the Baroque style. It is a tall building with a hipped slate roof that rises above the Baroque entrance front. The central part of the stuccoed front elevation features a round-headed rusticated arch set within a triangular pediment, supported by giant half-columns. On the upper floor, there is a large oriel bow window with small panes, while the main entrance is located on the ground floor.

The ground floor has attractive shop fronts at each end bay of the front elevation; these shops are arranged in pairs with doors set back in the centre, featuring angled convex windows with tall colonettes and stained glass in the upper lights. Above the ground floor, each end bay is adorned with giant panelled pilasters that have capitals on either side. The capitals on the front and side elevations are topped with a segmental pediment, which is further surmounted by an octagonal dome with a finial.

Between the pilasters, each end bay on the third floor has a lunette decorated with a keystone, archivolt, and swag, along with a paired window that has a cornice on consoles on the second floor, and another paired window on the first floor. The first bay of the returns is styled similarly to the front. The side elevations are plain, while the rear elevation facing Market Street features Baroque detailing and shopfronts on either side of a central doorway, all beneath an egg and dart cornice.
