Description

The Mond Buildings is a tall three-storey and attic structure, featuring a symmetrical five-bay front facing Union Street, with a splayed angle that includes an open, domed cupola and two additional bays on Park Street.

The building has a pediment over the central bay of its long frontage, with pedestals above a solid parapet and a dated cartouche in the tympanum. To the left of the attic, there is an arched and pedimented lunette. The main cornice is dentilled and includes egg-and-dart moulding, which breaks forward at giant Ionic three-quarter columns that are partly fluted. The ground floor has balustered parapets and banded pilasters framing the shop fronts. The top floor features arched windows with keyblocks, aprons, and small-pane glazing at the centre, while below are four-light mullioned bow windows. The side windows have lugged architraves with keyblocks, transoms, and aprons, with open pediments on consoles only for the first-floor windows. The left doorcase has an open pediment with block columns, a carved tympanum on brackets, and an arched entrance with double doors. The Park Street elevation displays similar architectural detailing.

At the corner, the cupola on the angled bay is topped with a scrolled finial and supported by pilasters, with columns in antis framing the openings. The parapets are adorned with paired dragons.

Inside, there is a notable staircase at the left end, featuring marble treads and an ironwork handrail.
