Description
The Mond Buildings is a three-storey and attic block constructed from Portland stone, with a painted ground floor. It features a symmetrical five-bay front facing Union Street, with a splayed angle that includes an open, domed cupola, and two additional bays on Park Street.
The building has a pediment over the central bay of its long frontage, with pedestals above a solid parapet and a dated cartouche in the tympanum. To the left of the attic, there is an arched and pedimented lunette. The main cornice is dentilled and includes egg-and-dart moulding, breaking forward at giant Ionic three-quarter columns that are partly fluted. The ground floor has balustered parapets and banded pilasters at the shop fronts. The top floor features arched windows with keyblocks, aprons, and small-pane glazing in the center, while below are four-light mullioned bow windows. The side windows have lugged architraves with keyblocks, transoms, and aprons, with open pediments on consoles only for the first-floor windows. The left doorcase has an open pediment with block columns, a carved tympanum on brackets, and an arched entrance with double doors. The Park Street elevation displays similar detailing.
The angled bay has a corner cupola topped with a scrolled finial, supported by pilasters and columns in antis at the openings, with paired dragons adorning the parapets.
Inside, there is a good staircase at the left end featuring marble treads and an ironwork handrail.
