Description
The Girl Memorial Statue is a Grade II listed bronze statue depicting a young girl in traditional dress, seated with her legs crossed at the ankles. She holds a garland of flowers and is positioned on a stepped plinth in front of an inscribed obelisk. The obelisk has a rectangular profile with tapering sides leading to a shallow, segmental head. It features inscriptions in Celtic Art Nouveau style, naming five Welsh writers born in the parish. The statue and obelisk rest on a deep square block, which is placed on a slightly wider shallow block made of pale limestone with a bevelled top. This is above a wider step of yellow limestone, which sits on a deeper step of pale pink sandstone. The base of the plinth is a square block of dark yellow limestone, also with a bevelled top and rough-faced panels. The memorial is enclosed in a triangular area, with the front featuring shallow wrought iron railings set over a bevelled limestone plinth. The railings are widely spaced and adorned with fleur-de-lys finials and floriate brackets.
