Description
The South African War Memorial is a Grade II* listed structure featuring bronze figures mounted on a tall Portland Stone plinth, which sits on a square base of granite steps. At each corner of the plinth, there is a metal lampstand topped with a glass globe. The memorial includes a standing, windblown winged figure of Peace holding an olive tree, although the dove has been vandalised in 1993. On the south-west side, there is a seated male figure representing Warfare, with his right hand grasping a short sword and his left upper arm resting against a shield. On the north-east side, a seated female figure representing Grief has her left arm resting on a shield and her left hand holding a wreath. An inscription is located on the south side of the plinth.
