Description
This is a Baroque style bridge made of Portland Stone ashlar, featuring rusticated piers. It has a single arch with stepped voussoirs and a keystone. The parapet, also made of Portland stone, includes four rusticated piers on each side. On the eastern parapet, there is a gabled Portland stone frame within a pier that encloses a drinking fountain in a niche. The outer face of the niche is framed by a cast-iron moulded frame with curvilinear edges, inscribed with "Erected by William Alexander Mayor of Cardiff AD 1860," "Cast by the Coalbrookdale Co," and "Wills Brothers, Sculptors, London." The niche features a figure of Jesus Christ on the left and a figure of the Woman of Samaria on the right, illustrating verses 13 and 14 of St John's Gospel, Chapter IV: "Jesus said unto her, whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst." The decoration includes vine leaves, tendrils, and cherubs, with the figures and decoration highlighted in gold.
