Description

The War Memorial is a significant structure featuring a square-section pillar made of unpolished granite, which supports a bronze statue. The pillar has raised fields on all four faces, with bands at the top and bottom for attaching bronze plaques. It is topped with a flat projecting capstone that has cyma moulding on the underside, supporting a stone plinth for the statue. The pillar stands on a tall stepped base adorned with banded rustication and hollow moulding around the top. This is set on a wide three-tier stone platform, with a semi-circular projection at the center of each step.

Atop the pillar is a tall bronze statue of the Angel of Victory, depicted holding a wreath in one hand and a small winged victory in the other. The sculptor's name, L F Roslyn, is inscribed on the bronze base, dated 1925. Each face of the pillar features a rectangular bronze plaque, each depicting a scene in relief. The front (south) plaque displays a wreath in high relief, with a band behind it inscribed with '1914 1918'. Below this is the inscription 'To the glory of God in memory of our honoured dead who fell in the Great War'. A smaller rectangular bronze tablet has been added beneath the raised panel, reading in relief 'Also / 1939 - 1945'.

The other panels illustrate themes of war, peace, and remembrance. The east panel shows a figure of a naked young man, loosely veiled by a sheet, holding a sword in one hand and a wreath in the other, with a scene of men in action behind him. The north panel features a robed woman representing peace, flanked by a small child and a lamb, with doves flying above and an inscription below that reads 'The peace of God ...'. The west panel depicts a fully robed figure of remembrance, holding a lamp in one hand and a branch in the other, with scenes above of soldiers carrying stretchers and lines of graveyard crosses.
