Description

Gorphwysfa is a late 18th century or early 19th century terrace of cottages, likely built for quarrymen, situated in the center of the village of Llansannan. The houses in this terrace feature varying masonry construction and many still have their original windows at the front and back. All the cottages, except for the Surgery, have front gardens enclosed by low rubble walls topped with bevelled capping and railings. These railings alternate between paired and joined sections with rounded heads and vertical rails topped with fleur de lys finials. The gates have a mix of tall and short vertical rails with similar finials, plain foot and lock stiles, and decorative wrought iron swirls over the top rail. The gateposts are square rubble piers capped with pyramids. In front of the Surgery, there is a paved area with a railed enclosure for the First World War memorial. At the back of the terrace, the cottages have several modern lean-to and flat-roofed extensions that are not particularly notable.

The largest house in the terrace is a mid-terraced property that has been divided into two separate dwellings. It is constructed of local rubble masonry laid roughly to courses and has a slate roof. Both houses share chimney stacks with the adjacent properties, Min y Ffrwd on the left and the Surgery on the right. The house on the right is a two-window range with an entrance door offset to the left. The first-floor windows are positioned directly under the eaves; the left window above the door is a 24-pane casement, while the right window and the one below it are 12-pane horizontally sliding sashes. The house on the left has a single 6-pane horned sash window on each floor, with the entrance door offset to the right. Both houses feature slate lintels and stone sills.
