Description

Crown House is a late 18th or early 19th century terrace of cottages, likely built for quarry workers, situated in the village of Llansannan. The terrace displays varying masonry construction, and most of the original windows remain in both the front and rear elevations. Each house in the terrace, apart from the Surgery, has a front garden enclosed by low rubble walls with bevelled capping and railings. The railings consist of paired and joined rails with rounded heads, alternating with vertical rails topped with fleur de lys finials. The gates feature tall and short vertical rails with fleur de lys finials, plain foot and lock stiles, and shaped wrought iron swirls above the top rail. Gateposts are square rubble piers with pyramidal caps. In front of the Surgery is a paved area with a railed enclosure containing a First World War memorial. Modern lean-to and flat-roofed additions are present at the rear of the cottages.

At the end of the terrace, Crown House is constructed from large blocks of roughly dressed local stone laid in courses. It has two widely spaced windows, with the doorway offset to the right (east) end. The windows are 12-pane horizontally sliding sashes; the ground floor windows have large lintels, and the first floor window is directly under the eaves. The slate roof is topped by a large rendered stone and brick ridge stack located to the right (east) of the left-hand (westernmost) windows.
