Description
This is a late Georgian shop and house premises, now divided into a pair of units at Nos 31 and 33 High Street. Dating from the late 18th century, the building served as a draper's shop with a domestic section and a sewing room on the upper floor from at least the mid-19th century. Later 19th-century alterations were made to the shop fronts and the first-floor window of No. 33.
The building is constructed of local rubble with a slate roof and plain eaves; a squat end chimney on the right has simple cornicing. The three-bay facade is slightly offset to the left. The shop fronts of the late 19th century are different to each side: No. 31 has large, canted shop windows with simple Gothic glazing flanking a central entrance with an arched, part-glazed door. No. 33 (left) includes a single large shop window to the left of a later entrance, set within the original rectangular bay with panelled pilasters, and has a plain, part-glazed door. The first floor has two original, un-ornamented 12-pane sash windows to No. 31 and a Victorian square wooden bay window to No. 33, with a moulded cornice and triple 2-pane sashes, with single sashes to the returns. The second floor has original 9-pane sash windows, with projecting stone sills. The interior was not inspected during the survey. The building forms part of a group with Nos 31 & 33 High Street.
