Description
J. Welch & Co. is a three-storey building with two-window fronts, located at Nos 252 and 254, which are made of colourwashed coursed rubble, while No 256 features scribed render. The building has slate roofs and cement rendered chimney stacks with stone caps, along with a later dormer window at No 254. The windows are mostly 12-pane sash types with cills, although the lower sashes of the first-floor windows at Nos 254 and 256 have had their glazing bars removed. The shop fronts have been altered and modernized; the one at No 252 includes a broadly splayed entrance with glazed tiling, while No 254 features pilasters and a six-panel door with panelled reveals leading to offices above the shop.
The right end has scribed render with a small pane sash window, and there is an attached two-storey cross range set into the slope of New Ebenezer Place. The left end is rendered and has a round arched headed window in the gable, made up of twinned 12-pane sashes beneath a fanlight, with additional sash windows below.
The rear of the building is stepped, with No 256 extending the furthest. Nos 252 and 256 are rendered, while No 254 is constructed of rubble, featuring small pane sash windows. Modern extensions are not included in this description.
