Description
This is a roughly square complex of workshops, with the main building oriented approximately north-east to south-west. It is a steel-framed structure clad in corrugated iron, built around 1900, featuring six bays and a barrel-shaped roof. Around 1937-1938, it was reclad in sawn slate blocks and has three large raking buttresses on the south-east side. Extending at right angles to the north-west are three parallel ranges, also constructed of sawn slate blocks with gable-ended slate roofs, likely replacing earlier buildings. These ranges house the foundry, woodworking shop, and stores, and include brick chimneys. The foundry has a continuous ridge light, while other areas are primarily lit by long horizontal windows located under the eaves. The main doors are horizontally sliding. The three subsidiary ranges create a small courtyard on the north-west side, which is enclosed by a high slate wall featuring an entrance gateway. One side of the yard contains a row of large slate-slab bins, presumably for storage.
Inside the foundry, the roof consists of three bays supported by tie beam trusses, while the remaining areas have king-post roofs. The original machinery and fittings are remarkably intact, including tuyere hearths, woodworking equipment, storage racks, an overhead gantry crane, and two railway lines with a small locomotive table.
