Description

The Workshops at Skelton Park, built between 1870 and 1873 for Bell Brothers' Cleveland iron mines, consist of blacksmiths' and joiners' workshops. They are constructed from good quality rockfaced sandstone ashlar with margined dressings on the front, while the rest is made of roughly coursed rubble, with brick chimneys and extensions.

The layout features a linear range with a large blacksmiths' shop to the northeast and a smaller joiners' workshop to the southwest, separated by a small engine room. At the rear of the joiners' workshop, there is a brick extension that was used as a saw mill. Additionally, at the northern end, there is a small projecting brick lean-to that was originally used for an electric blower for the hearths, along with a brick-built cart shed at the back.

The building is a single-storey long range of 10 bays. The blacksmiths' shop consists of five bays with a central cart entrance featuring a basket arch, which was originally flanked by two pairs of window openings. However, during the inspection, the wall to the north of the cart entrance had collapsed, taking down two window openings. The blacksmiths' retains part of its roof structure, including a central, ridge-placed timber ventilator. It has brick-built ridge stacks and four additional stacks rising from the rear wall, each serving a smithing hearth.

The engine room is a single bay with a basket-arched cart entrance and is served by a ridge stack to the left, although its roof structure has collapsed.

The joiners' workshop has four bays and features a basket-arched cart entrance in the center, flanked by three window openings. Its roof structure has also collapsed.
