Description
9-10 Castle Ditch is a Grade II listed building that was originally two premises designed to appear as one. It features a Georgian house and shop, standing three storeys high with three bays. The exterior is finished with scribed roughcast walls, a slate roof, and a brick stack on the left side.
On the lower storey, there is a well-detailed mid-20th century shop front projection, which is continuous with No 11. This shop front includes wood-mullioned and transomed windows, topped with a dentilled cornice. The middle storey has renewed 12-pane horned sash windows set in architraves, while the upper storey features similar 9-pane sash windows. The upper storey windows are complemented by a sill band.
The rear wall is also roughcast and includes a narrow 2-pane sash window located centrally in the middle storey.
No 9 retains its original staircase at the rear, consisting of a series of parallel flights. Beneath the projecting shop fronts, there are basement steps leading to a surviving basement sash window for No 9. This area leads to segmental brick-vaulted chambers with limewashed walls and cobbled floors, situated beneath the pavement.
