Description
Nether Parkley is a villa dating from 1881, designed by Wardrop and Reid, with single-story additions to the east elevation in 1900. It is a near-symmetrical building with a rectangular plan incorporating a lower, two-story service wing to the north. The main structure is built of cream-colored, squared, coursed, and stugged sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings. The building features a base course, band course, eaves course, cornices, and windows with raised, lugged margins and stop-chamfered reveals. Cills are bracketed beneath the first-floor single windows on the east and south elevations, and quoins are present.
The east (entrance) elevation has a taller advanced bay at the center, with a window on both the ground and first floors, topped by a piended roof. A recessed bay is to the left, and a projecting, single-story, pedimented porch sits in the re-entrant angle, featuring a two-leaf, half-glazed, fanlit door, flanked by engaged columns and angle pilasters. A tripartite window is on the left return, with a lead roof, and a molded date stone at the first floor displays intertwined initials ‘WHH’ and ‘?EHE’. Two recessed bays are to the right, with a single-story, balustraded canted projection in the re-entrant angle, and a window facing east. To the outer right, there is a ground floor window and a tall stair window to the left (with modern glazing), and another window to the right at the first floor.
The south elevation exhibits two symmetrical bays. A canted window spans both the ground and first floors on the right, with a cill course emphasizing the first-floor windows and a piended roof. A recessed bay sits to the left, containing a two-leaf French door with a window above.
The west elevation is organized with three symmetrical bays. The central bay is pedimented and features a corbelled, squared, architraved oriel window at the first floor, adorned with diamond decoration (the ground floor is partially obscured by creeper). Flanking the central bay are canted windows at ground level (with piended slate roofs) and bipartite windows at the first floor.
The two-story service wing is asymmetrical and connected to the main block by a recessed single bay link with a bipartite window at the first floor (the ground floor is partly obscured by creeper). A single-story wing abuts the service wing to the north.
The east elevation of the service wing has two bays: a bipartite window to the left, and a window to the right, with a similar arrangement at the first floor topped by a cill course. A single-story wing extends to the outer right, screened by an advanced block enclosing a kitchen court. This section incorporates cream coursed rubble, an ashlar cope with ball finials, and a narrow window off-center to the left. The window features an ogeed windowhead incorporated within a lintel, potentially salvaged from a ruined church.
The west elevation of the service wing is connected to the main block by the recessed link. To the left is a two-story, asymmetrical wing showcasing three windows at ground level and a tripartite window at the first floor. A single-story wing extends to the outer left.
The north elevation features the return of the single-story wings—a bipartite window at the center, a door to the right, and a window to the left. The end wall of the two-story wing has a window off-center to the right.
Most windows are sash and case, with mostly plate glass. The roof is covered in grey slate, topped by tall, prominent, corniced, and coped linked stacks. Two segmental-headed dormers and original rainwater goods are visible on the west elevation.
