Description

Canal House, located on Manse Road in Linlithgow, is likely the work of engineer High Baird and dates from the early 19th century. This two-storey, three-bay classical house has a rectangular plan and is constructed of cream stugged sandstone rubble, which is squared and coursed on the north (entrance) elevation, with droved ashlar dressings. The building features a base course, a cill course at the first floor, an eaves course, and a cornice.

The north (entrance) elevation showcases a central doorpiece set in a round-arched recess with voussoirs. It includes a pilastered door with an architrave, a cornice, a semi-circular umbrella fanlight, and flush two-leaf panelled doors. Flanking bays contain windows, and there is regular fenestration above.

On the east (side) elevation, there is one window at ground level to the right. The south (rear) elevation is three-bay with modern additions at ground level, a central stair window, and windows to the right and left at the first floor.

The house features 12-pane sash and case windows and a grey slate piended roof, with a roof light at the rear and end stacks.

At the rear of the property is a gig house, which is gabled and made of stugged cream sandstone rubble. It has a segmental carriage arch on the north elevation, with narrow windows on the east and west gableheads. The gig house also has a grey slate roof, ashlar coped skews, and ball finials. The forecourt is paved with granite sets, and the surrounding walls are made of stugged snecked sandstone with ashlar piers and corniced caps.
