Description

The Railway Wall and Railway Bridge on Union Road in Linlithgow date from around 1840 and have seen later additions and alterations.

The wall runs continuously to the north of the railway track, creating an enclosed walkway with separate lang rig walls to the north. It is mainly constructed of sandstone rubble, which is tooled, squared, and snecked in parts, and features rounded coping throughout. The wall varies in height and has curved sections.

The railway bridge is a single-span, round-arched structure that marks the eastern end of the wall. It includes a pedestrian underpass that connects the northern and southern sides of the railway track. The bridge is made of coursed and tooled cream sandstone, with droved ashlar dressings. It has regular voussoirs and raised string courses beneath the coped parapets. There is horizontal banding on the abutments and soffit, along with three steel supports beneath the arch. The bridge features curved wing walls to the north, which terminate the path to the east, and steps that provide access to the southern side.
