Description
The Cross Well in Linlithgow, built by stonemason Robert Gray in 1807, is an elaborately carved hexagonal well made of cream sandstone ashlar. It features a stepped base and a tall plinth, with two offset decorative stages. The lower stage has pinnacled angles, while the upper stages are adorned with figures and cusped flying buttresses. Mask-gargoyles sit atop the structure, and a circular cupola supports a unicorn holding a scroll with a lion rampant.
To the south, there is an adjacent pedestal that includes a mask gargoyle and the town's arms, which is dated 1807 in the tympanum. Additionally, there is a commemorative stone slab nearby, inscribed to honor the town's 600 years as a Royal Burgh from 1389 to 1989, created by Vincent Butler RSA in 1989.
