Description
The District Court, located at The Cross in Linlithgow, consists of the Burgh Halls, which include a town house and the old county hall that were merged in 1962. The old county hall dates from the early 19th century and underwent interior alterations in 1962-1963 by the architectural firm Rowand Anderson, Kininmonth and Paul.
This two-storey, six-bay classical hall has a rectangular plan and is constructed from cream, coursed and squared sandstone rubble, with ashlar stone on the west elevation. A cill course is present at the first floor, along with a cornice.
The west entrance elevation features six symmetrical bays, with four slightly recessed central bays that contain round-headed windows set in round-arched panels with voussoirs at the ground level, and taller square-headed windows above. The advanced end bays include a segmental-headed entrance on the outer right, which has modern two-leaf doors with a fanlight above, and a blind corniced window above that. To the outer left, there is a segmental-headed carriage pend with a corniced window above.
The east rear elevation has windows that are asymmetrically arranged. The round-headed windows have 12-pane sash and case designs, while the windows above them have a 4-pane sash and case design. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended shape, featuring corniced sandstone end stacks with some original cans remaining on the north side. The interior has not been seen.
