Description

The Masonic Lodge at 2 Market Lane in Linlithgow was built between 1905 and 1906 by William Scott. It is a single-storey building with an L-shaped plan, featuring a three-bay entrance pavilion facing Market Lane and a taller hall located behind it. The exterior is constructed from stugged squared and coursed cream sandstone rubble, with droved ashlar detailing on the main elevation, while the hall is harled on the east side. It includes base and eaves courses and a cornice.

The south entrance elevation has three bays, with a pilastered doorpiece on the outer left that features Egypto-Greek capitals, an entablature, and a blocking course. There is a plate glass fanlight above the panelled two-leaf doors, with a window in the center and another on the outer right. A modern concrete block wall encloses a courtyard in the re-entrant angle on the outer right.

The windows are plate glass sash and case style. The pavilion has a piended slate roof, while the hall features a jerkin-headed roof with horizontal bands of glazed panels on the north and south sides, along with a square louvre vent and flanking vents at the center.

Inside, the lodge is tailored for Masonic ceremonies, with a rectangular-plan hall that includes a panelled timber dado and perimeter benches. The plastered wagon roof is supported by beams resting on heraldic stone corbels, and there are star-speckled skylights at the center of the roof. At the far end, there is a dais with an open pedimented, pilastered panel at the center.
