Description

2 Kirkgate in Linlithgow is a house dating from around 1700. It is a low, two-storey building with a single storey over a basement, situated on sloping ground. The house is constructed from cream sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features raised painted margins around the windows.

The entrance elevation has seven asymmetrical bays, with alterations and enlargements to the openings. To the left, there is a taller gabled block, while to the right, a lower four-bay gabled wing sits on higher ground. The block on the left has a window positioned off-centre to the right, a deep-set door to the outer right, and a lower door to the left, both of which have boarded doors with glazed panels at the top. There is also a first-floor window off-centre to the left, along with traces of blocked windows to the right and left. The lower wing on the right features a low blocked door to the outer left, with two widely spaced windows in the centre on the first floor, and bipartite windows to the outer right and left, also showing traces of blocked windows.

The rear elevation is asymmetrical and rendered, with a door located at the far left. The house has sash and case windows, mostly with two panes in the lower sashes and multi-pane in the upper sashes. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring ashlar coped skews and rendered apex stacks at the gables, which also have crowstepped gables.
