Description

The police station on High Street in Linlithgow was designed by Walker Todd of Dick Peddie and Walker Todd in 1935. It is a two-storey, asymmetrical, L-plan building featuring classical details, with the main block positioned at the corner. The structure is constructed from snecked cream sandstone rubble, accented with polished ashlar dressings. Notable features include an ashlar plinth that incorporates the ground floor window cills, rusticated quoins, and a band course on the principal block. The building also has a moulded eaves course, a cornice, and architraved doorpieces with a cornice at the north and east entrances. The windows are bipartite and tripartite, featuring stone mullions.

On the north (entrance) elevation, there is a doorpiece to the outer right of three slightly recessed bays, with a tripartite window to the left. Above, there are three windows on the first floor and two broad, slightly advanced bays to the left of centre, which have bipartite windows at the ground level with a plaque positioned between them. The second floor has two additional windows. To the outer right is a single-storey wing that contains two small barred windows, which were part of the former cell block.

The east (side) elevation displays five symmetrical bays on the principal block with a central doorpiece and regular fenestration. To the far left, there is a recessed two-storey section with two bays that used to be the sergeants' quarters, featuring two doors and windows on the first floor. An advanced bay on the outer left has a full-height chimney wall that breaks the eaves, supporting a tall corniced stack.

The south (rear) elevation includes a two-bay harled return to the lower wing, with a single-storey canted window on the left and bipartite windows on the right that break the eaves on the first floor. The ground floor features 12-pane sash and case windows, while the first floor has 9-pane sash and case windows. The roof is covered with green slate and has piended swept eaves.
