Description
Tantah, located on Edderston Road in Peebles, is a large villa built in 1884 and subdivided in 1949. The building is two stories high with an attic and is constructed from whinstone with cream sandstone dressings and stugged quoins. It features overhanging eaves and exposed rafters, with rounded arrises, timber gabled bipartite dormers, and stone mullions.
The north elevation has three bays, with the right bay slightly set back. It includes windows on both floors with shouldered and moulded architraves, a dormer, and is enclosed by a dwarf wall with a panelled parapet. The central bay features a three-storey tower in the re-entrant angle, with a square ground floor that has an architraved window to the north and a doorway to the west return. The entrance has a diagonally boarded and panelled two-leaf door with a letterbox fanlight, and the first floor has a reduced round window and a bipartite window to the north with a fluted frieze and cornice. A date panel from 1884 is located to the right, with a moulded string course above. The third storey has six narrow round-headed windows joined by an impost band, a moulded cornice, a pepperpot roof, and a wrought-iron finial. The left bay is gabled and features a two-storey canted window with smooth chamfered arrises and a pierced strapwork parapet, along with a round-headed window in the gablehead and decorative bargeboards. Set back to the left is a piend-roofed single-storey service wing with a pair of narrow windows.
The west elevation also has three bays, with a broad gabled left bay that includes a flat-roofed canted window at ground level and a bipartite window at the first floor with shouldered and moulded architraves, along with a round-headed window in the gablehead. The right bays have windows on both floors and a single dormer.
The south elevation features three bays, with a blank gable to the left that has an oculus in the gablehead. The right bays contain windows on both floors and a single dormer, while to the right is the service wing with a window, door, and garage.
The east elevation is mostly blank, with the gable to the left largely obscured by the service wing and a shouldered wallhead stack. A glazed outer stair on a rubble base provides access to the upper flat.
The windows are timber sash and case, altered at ground level. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are rounded, coped ashlar stacks.
Inside, the villa is divided into two flats, with the stair removed at ground level. The hall features a tiled pavement, and the original dining room on the ground floor has an elaborate vine cornice and a sideboard recess.
