Description
The building is a garage located at Arnsheen on Bonnington Road in Peebles, designed by J D Cairns and dated 1914. It is a two-storey and basement free style villa constructed from squared snecked and stugged red sandstone, featuring irregular long and short polished cream ashlar dressings, rounded arrises, and overhanging timber eaves.
On the west (entrance) elevation, the main two-storey block has a projecting ashlar porch at the center, which includes a bolection moulded doorway with two-leaf panelled doors and a thistle with the date 1914 above it. To the immediate right is a window, and above, there are three grouped windows at the first floor that break the eaves with a plain gable. There is another window to the right at ground floor, and at the corner, a corbelled ashlar turret at the first floor has a pair of windows that also break the eaves, topped with a bellcast lead roof and finial. To the left, there is a tall stair window and a small window, possibly for a basement stair or cupboard. At the far left, there is a single-storey range with a pair of windows.
The south elevation is blank, featuring a turret to the left and a wallhead stack, with a shouldered section to the right. Below the corbelling, there is a wall-mounted sundial with a copper gnomon.
The east (garden) elevation consists of the main two-storey, two-bay block. Each bay has canted ashlar windows; the left bay has a single-storey section with a coped parapet, and at the first floor, there is a bipartite window that breaks the eaves with a gabled dormerhead. The right bay is two-storey and also breaks the eaves. To the right, there is a set-back range with a basement entrance and a closet above in the re-entrant angle, along with a ground floor window and a wallhead window at the first floor/attic.
The north elevation features a projecting ground floor and basement range with a door and three windows at ground level, and a basement window to the left. The building has timber sash and case 12-pane windows and piended roofs covered with grey slates.
The interior was not seen in 1994.
The garage, located to the north, is built of brick with ashlar framing at the front and has boarded double doors, each featuring a three-pane window, along with a piended roof.
Additional features include stugged red sandstone drum gatepiers with domed caps, wrought-iron gates, and a stone and brick boundary wall adjoining the garage to the north. In the garden, there is a pedestal sundial with a polygonal base, a carved baluster shaft, and a corniced square table-dial with a gnomon.
