Description

This is a two-story and attic, circa 1870, L-plan villa with an attached garage, located at Laigh Park, Park Road, Johnstone. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, with squared and snecked rubble to the sides and rear, and ashlar dressings. A part base course is present. The principal, or southeast, elevation is symmetrical, with a prominent round-headed doorpiece featuring a ball finial and concave molding, and round-headed first-floor windows similarly hoodmoulded. Stone mullions and molded arrises are also notable architectural features.

The southeast elevation features steps leading to a two-leaf timber door with a semicircular plate glass fanlight, flanked by dwarf walls. Each flanking bay has a canted tripartite window topped with a cornice and blocking course, which gives way to a single window that breaks through the eaves into a broad stone dormerhead. The southwest elevation is gabled and includes two windows grouped toward the center at the first floor. A similar design is found on the northeast elevation, with an additional window to the outer right at ground level.

The northwest, or rear, elevation shows a bay to the right of the center at ground level featuring a rectangular-plan tripartite window and smaller returns, alongside a small window to the left. A stair window is situated off-center to the right, above which are two vertically aligned small windows. First-floor windows break through the eaves into finialled dormerheads on the outer bays, a canted tripartite timber dormer (with small outer lights) is located centrally, and a small flat-roofed dormer with casement or fixed windows sits to the right. A single-story, pitched-roof projection extends to the outer left, incorporating a door, a bipartite window, a blind oculus within the gablehead, further doors and windows on the return, and three windows on the left return.

The windows are timber sash and case with 4-pane and plate glass glazing. The stair window features decoratively-astragalled leaded margin glazing. The roof is covered in grey slates, with coped ashlar stacks and some decorative cans. Overhanging eaves are present, along with plain bargeboarding, cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers on the southeast side.

The interior retains a good early decorative scheme, including decorative and plain plasterwork cornices, marble and timber fireplaces, parquet floors, and sash lifts. The vestibule has a mosaic-tiled floor and a tripartite screen door with a segmental fanlight containing leaded coloured glass, mirroring the style of the stair window. The hall features a fireplace and a timber-panelled dog-leg staircase.

A harled and slated, rectangular-plan double garage with a double piend roof and decorative terracotta ridge tiles serves as an ancillary structure. It includes paired two-leaf, part-glazed timber garage doors on the southeast side, three windows on the southwest side, and a further window on the northwest side, all with plate glass glazing in timber sash and case windows.

The property is enclosed by ashlar-coped squared and snecked rubble boundary walls, with pyramidally-coped square-section bull-faced gatepiers supporting decorative two-leaf ironwork gates.
