Description
Gordon Cottage, located at 1 Church Square in Ballater, is a traditional L-plan cottage built around 1820-1823. The building is two stories high and has three bays, though it has been divided into two properties. It features a white painted harl exterior and is situated in the southeast corner of the main square in Ballater Village. The east elevation is asymmetrical and includes a single-storey 20th-century addition on the left side. The entrance door is made of timber and is off-centre, with an upper glazed panel.
On the south elevation, to the left gable of Gordon Cottage, there is a two-bay, two-storey section with an entrance door. The wall is also white painted harl and includes a round arch opening with an ironwork gate to the far right. The windows are predominantly plate glass timber sash and case, and there are gable stacks topped with grey graded slate.
The interior of the cottage has been extensively modernised. There are also two single-storey outbuildings to the west (rear) of the property, which are similarly finished with white painted harl. The westernmost outbuilding features a central timber door with nine-panel glazing in the upper half and two fixed timber windows with twelve panes each. The other outbuilding has a corrugated iron roof and a wallhead stack.
The boundary walls surrounding the property are made of random rubble with rubble coping on the north and east sides.
