Description
The Albert Memorial Hall, built in 1875 by W Duigid and Son, is located in Station Square, Ballater. This predominantly two-storey, asymmetrical U-shaped hall features a multi-gabled design and a three-stage crenellated tower at the eastern re-entrant angle. Constructed from pink coursed granite with grey granite dressings, it has a grey granite base course, band courses, and eaves course. There are consoled stone balconies above the entrance doors, and some later minor additions have been made.
The angled corner entrance to the Albert Hall is located to the left and is marked by a pinnacled feature that extends to the first and attic storey, along with a commemorative plaque. The Gordon Institute has a central advanced full-height gabled entrance bay, while the Victoria Hall to the right features a gable to the north, which includes a four-panel timber door set within gables and a ball-finialled entrance porch.
The hall predominantly has timber six-pane bipartite sash and case windows. A late 20th-century oculus stained glass window is located in the eastern gable. The roof is covered with grey graded slates and features decorative ridge tiles, conical and triangular ventilation openings, and gable finials. Ashlar coped skews and some gabled skewputts are also present.
Inside, the Albert and Victoria halls retain some original features, such as pine panelling at dado height and four-panel timber doors, although other areas have been comprehensively modernised. The open timber ceiling displays a trefoil motif that springs from stone corbels.
