Description
The Bank of Scotland, located at 7 and 9 Bridge Street in Ballater, is a two-storey, five-bay classical bank building designed by William Henderson in 1870. It features a symmetrical façade with a central pilastered doorpiece, constructed from stugged pink granite ashlar with grey granite dressings and raised chamfered quoins on the east side facing the street. There is a cill band at the first floor level and a blocking course at the top.
The building has predominantly plate glass timber sash and case windows on the ground floor, while the first storey features four-pane windows. The roof is covered with grey slates and has ashlar coped skews, with gable end stacks and a wallhead stack located at the rear.
Inside, the ground floor has been comprehensively modernised, whereas the first floor retains a predominantly original room layout with some simple cornicing.
The boundary walls consist of a low coursed granite wall along the street, topped with ashlar coping and featuring late 20th-century railings and a taller gate pier. To the left of the gate, there is a rubble boundary wall with rubble coping that extends along the south side of the building.
