Description

Kennel Cottages at Mount Stuart House date from the earlier to mid 19th century. This L-plan structure consists of a single-storey, 10-bay range of three cottages arranged in a 3-4-3 formation, creating the eastern wing. There are various pitched additions at the rear. The southern wing features a single-storey, 4-bay cottage with a single-storey, 2-bay addition set back to the outer left, and there is an enclosed courtyard at the rear. The exterior is finished in whitewashed harl with painted surrounds to the openings. The cottages have boarded timber doors with inset tripartite openings on the eastern elevation and projecting cills on the southern side.

On the eastern (front) elevation, there are boarded timber doors in the penultimate bays at the outer left and right, with bipartite fanlights and single windows flanking them. A boarded timber door is off-set to the left of centre, with single windows in the remaining bays to the right.

The southern (side) elevation features a projecting entrance porch in the penultimate bay at the outer right, with a timber panelled door inset in the eastern elevation. There are single windows in the remaining bays to the left and right, and 3-light canted dormers in the bay to the left of centre and the outer right. The recessed addition to the outer left has a boarded timber door off-set to the left of centre and a single window off-set to the right.

The glazing predominantly consists of 16-pane timber sash and case windows in the eastern wing and 12-pane sash and case windows in the southern wing. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, and there are replacement rainwater goods. The ridge and apex stacks are coped and finished in whitewashed harl, with circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1996. The boundary wall surrounding the site to the east features round-arched rubble coping atop a harl-pointed rubble wall.
