Description
The Ballroom at Mar Lodge Estate, built in 1898, is a rectangular function hall that remains in use today. It features a timber frame and weatherboarding, highlighted by distinctive red-painted diamond lattice trellising. The side elevations are supported by cast iron bracers on stone plinths, and there are gabled projecting wings to the west and north. A central two-leaf door is located on the south elevation, with cast iron vents on the east elevation.
The building has a piended roof adorned with three small ventilation gablets on the east and west side elevations, each topped with cast iron finials. The length of the side elevations includes glazing lights, and there are ventilation louvres at the apex of the north and south gables, also featuring decorative finials.
Inside, the ballroom boasts timber tongue and groove panelling throughout, with a herringbone pattern above a decorative carved timber cornice. The exposed timber roof structure is notably decorated with over 2000 stag skulls. The floor consists of a tongue and groove boarded central section, with carpeting on the sides.
