Description
St Ninian's Chapel, located on the Mar Lodge Estate, is a small, aisleless neo-Romanesque chapel designed by A Marshall Mackenzie around 1895. The building features squared and coursed rubble construction and has a steeply pitched rounded arch entrance porch on the southwest side, which includes a timber boarded two-leaf door with decorative ironmongery. The chapel has small round-arched windows and timber diamond lattice trellising on the north elevation. A single lancet light is present on the west gable elevation, while the east gable features a rounded light topped with a Celtic cross finial. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with red tiles, complete with ridge caps and ashlar coping on the gable ends. There are also a pair of triangular ventilators near the ridge on the north side.
Inside, the sanctuary has a stone floor, while the remainder of the church is finished with timber boards. The interior is adorned with ornate altar furnishings, including a timber reredos with painted panels and altar hangings. The chapel contains mahogany pews and funerary monuments dedicated to the Duke and Duchess of Fife located in front of the altar. The roof is supported by an exposed hammerbeam structure.
