Description

Mar Lodge is a large, two-storey hunting mansion built between 1895 and 1898 by architect A Marshall MacKenzie. It features an idiosyncratic Tudor/Highland style with multiple gables and a five-bay central section flanked by wings at near right angles, forming a splayed U-plan. At the rear, there is a large single-storey service court. The exterior is constructed from coursed rock-faced Aberdeen-bonded granite, with steeply pitched gables that include mock-Tudor half-timbering and decorative bargeboards, as well as overhanging eaves between the gables. The building has a base course and a string course, and the central entrance consists of a two-leaf panelled door with a decorative timber rustic porch. The ground floor features several bay windows.

The windows are a mix of timber sash and case styles, with multi-paned upper sashes, some being mullioned, and others featuring stone mullions and transoms. The first floor also has mullions and transoms. The roof is covered with rosemary tiles and is adorned with a variety of distinctive tall wallhead and ridge stacks, some displaying chevron detail, along with multiple chimney cans.

Inside, the central section was gutted by fire in 1991 and has since been reconstructed using old photographs to reflect the appearance of the late 19th and early 20th century lodge. It includes ornate decorative plasterwork and extensive timber panelling. Several ornately carved doorpieces, including pedimented doors, lead to the main lobby, and there are large decorative chimneypieces in the principal rooms.

Additionally, there is a garden wall made of coped granite rubble that runs east from the main lodge, featuring a single square-headed opening. Archaeological investigations indicate that this wall is the last surviving standing structure from the 18th century Dalmore/Mar Lodge complex.
