Description

The Sports Pavilion at Bath Recreation Ground dates to the late 19th century. It is a single-story building with an attic, constructed with timber weather-boarding and a hipped roof covered in Roman tiles, replacing earlier plain tiles on the lower side wings. The roof has timber finials to either gable end, one now missing. A decorative octagonal leaded bell turret rises from the ridge, topped with an ogee-shaped roof and a timber and wrought iron finial.

The pavilion has a rectangular plan with an open verandah leading to a central hall containing a built-in bar, flanked by lower wings that house dressing rooms with toilets and showers at the rear. The main south elevation features a covered verandah supported by three cambered arches springing from decorative timber baluster columns. A central two-panelled door is flanked by timber double casement windows, two by four panes. The lower side wings have projecting bays with overhanging eaves and multi-paned timber casement windows. A decorative arch above the central window resembles a Venetian window. Vertical timber framing is visible in the gables. A series of brick and concrete steps lead to the pitch, replacing previous gravel steps. The side and rear elevations are clad in horizontal timber weather-boarding and include multi-pane casement windows, with a row of four windows lighting the bar at the rear.

Inside, the hall features vertical timber wall panelling and a long bar with timber panelling. Two large cambered arches are supported by decorative timber baluster columns. Small utility or storage rooms are located to either side of the bar. The dressing rooms have vertical timber wall panelling behind fixed benches. Original features include lath and plaster walls, timber panelled doors, and architraves throughout.
