Description

Uplands is a large detached mansion house designed by William Leiper in 1907, built in an English traditional style. The building is two stories with an attic, constructed from snecked rubble that is partially harled and partially half-timbered. The entrance front faces east and features a gabled porch set within a finely sculptured architrave, topped with a small round-arched bipartite fanlight. The gable is adorned with a ball finial, and there are four round-arched lights on the flank.

The southeast corner has a two-story bay, with the upper section being half-timbered and featuring a balcony roof and an oriel window. The south front includes a central canted bay that extends through all floors, with the top stage corbelled out and fitted with two-light windows, and a broad-eaved conical roof with a bell cast. To the right, there is a half-timbered section with a first floor and attic, featuring broad-eaved twin gables, each with an oriel window. A glazed lean-to porch has been added to the left.

On the west front, the south canted bay is timbered at the first floor and above, cantilevered to a square shape and gabled at the attic, with drop pendants at the angles. The northwest gabled projection features a half-timber gable, and the roof sweeps down into a gambrelled single-storey and attic back wing.
